Allegrone Co. and Hearthway have broken ground on three affordable housing projects in the city of Pittsfield, MA. The projects will provide long-term housing and supportive resources for some of Pittsfield's most vulnerable residents — those experiencing homelessness.

Local and state housing advocates gathered at the Zion Lutheran Church last Tuesday to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new permanent supportive apartments and a housing resource center. The three projects are the product of a wide-reaching partnership between local and state housing advocates, faith communities, the city of Pittsfield and the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities.

“Today is a good day. Today we celebrate our community’s commitment and responsibility to our neighbors, especially those who are unhoused, living in shelter or outside,” said Eileen Peltier, CEO of housing nonprofit Hearthway, which is developing the projects. “Today, Pittsfield is taking a big step toward our responsibility to make our community stronger for all of us.”

Allegrone Co. is Construction Manager to the 37 new affordable housing units coming to Pittsfield. The West Housatonic Apartments will have 28 units, and 9 units will be located on the second floor of the Zion Lutheran Church on First Street. The housing resource center will be located on the lower level of the church.

"Our goal isn't to just shelter people, our goal is to house people," Housing Secretary Ed Augustus said. "Shelter is a stop along the way, perhaps, but it's not an end goal. The end goal is a home."

The housing projects are slated to be completed in late summer of 2025.
