Crown Street Women's Shelter

Founded in 1976, Abby's House provides shelter and affordable housing as well as advocacy and support services to homeless, battered, and low income women, with or without children.

Since 1890, the building at 21-23 Crown Street has stood largely unaltered, save for minor repairs and upkeep. The goal was to expand and modernize the facility, to ensure that women and children in need have access to a safe and welcoming place to call home.

The extensive renovations ensured the building was ADA-accessible and allowed an increase in capacity. The program included staff bedrooms, meeting spaces, a state-of-the-art decontamination room, a new children enrichment room, and expanded kitchen space designed to facilitate community and family meal preparation.
