The Wright Building Renovation

Allegrone Co. is the architect, builder, and developer for the Wright Building Redevelopment Project. The historic 1898 Wright Building in addition to the space next door - the former Jim’s House of Shoes - will be converted into 34 market-rate apartments (with 20% of the units designated as affordable housing) and 6 storefronts.

The Wright Building is a three-story historic structure within the Upper North Street Historic District in downtown Pittsfield. Built in 1898, the property once contributed to the expansion of Pittsfield's downtown, but has been underutilized for decades and bears the impact of forty years of deferred maintenance.  Allegrone Co. seeks to transform this city block from a blighted area back to a contributing asset to the city.  This full-scale historic redevelopment will bring back ground floor storefront spaces and bring 21 new residential apartments on the upper floors.  Phase 2 will be the adjacent, also condemned, building known as Jim's House of Shoes.  This one-story structure will transform into a new four-story building to add to the block's mixed-use redevelopment.

The project aligns with the City's goals of augmenting its housing stock and increasing residency and commercial activity downtown.  Allegrone Co. plans to work with the City of Pittsfield to transform the rear of the city block into a pedestrian throughway to encourage walking and connectivity to the BRTA train/bus station on the south of the block.  This project seeks to demonstrate a successful mixed-income property, with 20% of the units restricted to affordable, per the City inclusionary zoning by-law.

Downtown has shifted away from some of our larger companies that would have people here during the day and out for lunch, grabbing coffee, or going out to a bar after work. Now that they’re remote, we’re definitely in need of people downtown regularly. The addition of housing in our downtown will make that difference.”
